Sandton Probus outsmarts 12 other teams

SANDTON – The Sandton Probus team recently won bragging rights after winning the inter-club quiz.

Thirteen teams representing various Probus organisations recently pitted their wits against each other.

The organisations were brought together by the Probus Asociation of Gauteng which is an association of autonomous clubs, around South Africa and throughout the world, that cater to the fellowship needs of retired professionals and persons who have held office in any business or organisation.

The winning team, Sandton Probus, was headed up by Jim Laing, with Mike Harris and Dian Lavery.

“The inter-club quiz gives us an ideal opportunity to get together with other Probus clubs out of our area and it is always good fun, whoever wins the bragging rights. There was a good mix of categories giving everyone a chance to shine,” said Lavery.

Harris commented on the format of the quiz as the quizmaster, Bryan Scarrott, asked a question to each team, and if that team could not answer then it passed to the next team in line. “This resulted in good interaction between teams and supporters,” said Harris.

Lavery said the best question was: ‘What would a Scotsman do with his spurtle?’

“This was probably meant to be a real poser but it happened to come to our Sandton team,” he said. “Two of the three members being Scottish, it was very easy for us to answer – he would use it to stir his porridge.”

Sandton Probus holds its monthly lunch meetings at Bryanston Sports Club and host speakers on a wide variety of subjects.

Some of the speakers that will speak at the club this year include Janet Cade whose talk will be titled Mining Bitcoin; Jos Scharrer, The Dutch Resistance revealed; Wayne Duvenage of Outa, Business and Civil Societies role in tackling corruption; Steve Blake, Polar Bears in Churchill, Canada; Colin Francis, Flying RAF Canberras during the Cold War; and Philippe Menache, Churches in South Africa.

Brian Sloan, president of Sandton Probus said, “Sandton Probus welcomes new members. We are an organisation of retired men and women and aim to cater to a range of interests in our choice of speakers.”
