VIDEOS: Political moments that left us saying, ‘Oh for Pete’s sake’

To commemorate Oh for Pete’s Sake Day we compiled a list of our favourite moments which had us saying, Oh for Pete’s Sake!

“I’ve done nothing wrong”

Most recently Jacob Zuma’s interview with the state broadcaster, SABC, after he was recalled by the African National Congress. During the interview, Zuma asserted that he was being victimised by his own party as they did not provide him with reasons for why he should step down.

“This is being done in a manner that I felt I’m being victimised here. I never defied, I disagreed with the decision, because my feeling is the decision is not right,” said Zuma during the interview.

Sleeping minister

During a 2016 parliamentary debate, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was called out by Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Mbuyiseni Ndlozi for sleeping during the debate. At the time Ndlozi jokingly said, “I’m worried that this minister, who we pay so much, is she sleeping in parliament? With that position, she is going to fall. The minister is sleeping, you cannot say that is not a point of order.”

Fight it out

In the National Assembly in 2014 parliament turned into a battleground when the EFF and security MP Ngwanamakwetle Mashabela called Zuma a thief during her address and refused to withdraw the statement. She was then asked to be escorted out which resulted in a scuffle between various opposition parties and security.

Malema scolds journalist

In a press conference in 2010 Julius Malema, who was still the leader of the ANC Youth League, scolded a journalist who had interrupted him and had him removed from the briefing. Malema was speaking about people from Sandton commenting on matters relating to Zimbabwe to which BBC journalist Jonah Fisher interjected that Malema himself lives in Sandton. Malema then called Fisher a ‘bastard’, a ‘small boy’ and a ‘bloody agent’. Fisher then left and Malema continued with his speech.

Karma is a b***h

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille tweeted, “For all the gloating Joburgers, please remember: Karma can be a real b***h” in response to a tweet about the Lesotho Highlands Water Project being behind schedule. The tweet caused a major backlash which resulted in Zille apologising for the tweet. Zille said that she had mistakenly used the reply to the wrong tweet, meaning to send it to someone who had posted a video wasting water.

Quite right: I appended my tweet to the wrong message; I meant to reply to someone from Jozi who sent me a pic of a gleeful person wasting water because he can. I sent back what was meant to be a playful dig, but was seen differently because it arrived out of context. Apologies.
