Dumping problem in Sandton continues but where can you dump legally?

SANDTON – Pikitup has released a list of legal and illegal dumping sites in the Sandton area.

The City of Johannesburg is faced with a massive illegal dumping problem and the question still remains, where can community members dump legally?

Muzi Mkhwanazi of Pikitup recently shed some light on where the legal dumps across the city are and where the illegal dumping hotspots are.

Mkhwanazi said, “The community can dump legally at Pikitup garden sites. “However, only household quantities of builders’ rubble and garden waste can be dumped for free.

“Clean builders rubble, meaning uncontaminated builders rubble that is free of wood, zinc and steel, can be dumped at the landfill site free of charge. For general waste, Pikitup charges R102 per 500kg.”

According to Mkhwanazi, large quantities of builders rubble residents have to apply for an adhoc skip hire from Pikitup at a cost of R1 871.08 per lift which includes delivery and collection.

Mkhwanazi said there is an extensive list of illegal dumping hotspots in Sandton.

These include various streets in Marlboro, Kelvin, Buccleuch, Sunninghill and Bryanston.

There are four Pikitup garden sites in the greater Sandton area where the community can legally dump:
