Metro police recently announced that they will be more strict when it comes to illegal dumping as part of Operation Buya Mtheto.
Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police, said as part of the operation, officers will impound any vehicle used for dumping of refuse or rubble which is in contravention of the City of Johannesburg by-laws.
“Officers will issue fines of R1500 to anyone found dumping illegally and the owner of the vehicle will have to pay R2 850 to retrieve such vehicle from the Metro police pound. “
Minnaar said previous fines imposed were not effective as people were not paying the fines. The previous fines were R500 for a small load, R1 000 for a bakkie and R1 500 for a big load.
“The fines will be imposed regardless of the size of the load or vehicle.”
In addition, Minnaar said that on 8 February, four trucks were impounded for illegal dumping.
