The Total garage on William Nicol Drive was robbed on 12 February and the drop-safe ‘bombed’ by five suspects.
Mike Engelbrecht suburb manager for the Parkmore Community Association (PCA) said at about 2.30am, 24/7 Security received a panic signal from the garage and PCA vehicles were dispatched as back up.
“On arrival, the PCA vehicle saw a light blue Toyota Corolla and a number of men on the forecourt,” he said.
“The PCA car stopped and called for further backup but almost immediately the guards were under fire with two bullets hitting the car.”
Engelbrecht said five armed suspects had bombed the drop-safe and stole an undisclosed amount of money and also stole cellphones from two staff members.
“The suspects then fled in the direction of Bryanston. Seven [police] vehicles arrived and 32 cartridges were recovered.”
“We are enormously grateful there was no injury to 24/7 Security officers or staff at Total garage. This is a reminder of how often security officers are at risk.
“In this situation, there is nothing anyone can safely do except prevent injury or death by taking cover and then going to the assistance of the affected staff.”
Captain Makgowanyana Maja spokesperson for the Randburg Police Station confirmed that a business in the area had been robbed by more than three suspects with high calibre firearms and several cartridges were recovered from the scene.
“An undisclosed amount of money was taken. The police had launched a manhunt,” said Maja.
