UPDATE – Linbro Park shooting: Victim speaks out

SANDTON – The victim said they responded to a report about possible cable theft in Linbro Park just after 8pm on 6 February.

Following the incident last night when a security guard was shot after responding to a call about cable theft, more details have emerged.

Speaking to the Sandton Chronicle, the security guard who was shot, provided some details as to what happened.

The victim said they responded to a report about possible cable theft in Linbro Park just after 8pm on 6 February. “When we got there we were caught off guard and the suspects started shooting at us. There are a lot of cases of cable theft in the area but we have never been shot at before,” he said.

He explained that he was not grazed in the hand, but shot in the upper arm. “There were about five guys and two firearms.”

The security guard is recovering in hospital.

Captain Mavela Masondo, the provincial spokesperson for the police, said the victim is a security guard for ZSS Security.

“The suspects started shooting at the security guards. One suspect was carrying a rifle and another had a pistol.”

Masondo said the guard shot back at the suspects and chased them.

“The suspects are unknown and a case of attempted murder has been opened,” concluded Masondo.

The incident happened on the evening of 6 February, according to the provincial police’s Captain Mavela Masondo, after a security officer responded to a cable theft incident in Linbro Park.

“As the officer got to the hill near the N3, the suspect shot the security officer and grazed him in the hand,” said Masondo.

He added that they would visit the officer in hospital to obtain his statement but, at the moment, no arrests had been made.

Masondo also confirmed that there may have been five suspects involved in the incident.

According to emergency personnel that were on scene, the officer had been shot in the arm and transported to a hospital in a stable condition.
