The Sandton SPCA needs a one-tonner to save more animals

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA desperately needs donations for another vehicle.

The Sandton SPCA is in desperate need of another vehicle to assist with emergency calls, and they’re appealing to the community for assistance.

They require a sizeable one-ton bakkie because some of the areas they have to go to have terrible roads and driving in these areas isn’t always possible with a small vehicle.

The team covers a vast area, which extends from Lonehill in the north to Jules Street in the south, Linbro in the east and Parkhurst in the west.

The need became more urgent after they received a call about a dog being stoned by children, but they were too late to get to the scene.

Jaco Pieterse, general manager of the Sandton SPCA, said the incident happened on 26 January in Lombardy East when a concerned member of the public reported the matter.

“We immediately sent one of our inspectors out to investigate. Unfortunately, both our inspectors were on the outskirts of our area busy with other cruelty complaints.”

Pieterse said, unfortunately, the children ran away when the inspector got to the scene, and they were unable to trace the culprits. “We are not going to give up.”

The reason for the cruelty, according to Pieterse, was because the dog was apparently a nuisance in the area, destroying garbage bags and roaming the streets.

In emergency cases, the inspectors leave everything they are busy with. “However, getting to the emergency is not always an easy task with traffic and all, but the animals are always our priority.

“During peak traffic it can take us up to an hour to get to an emergency, depending on where it is. Because we are so busy, [it takes longer] to investigate some of the non-urgent matters.

“The case has not been reported to police yet. We are in the process of compiling a docket. Once more information comes to light we will be able to open a case with the police.”

The Sandton SPCA requires R90 000 for another vehicle and are appealing for donations.
