Bryanston murderer sentenced to 28 years

BRYANSTON – The man who murdered a worker at Hobart Grove Shopping Centre in 2016 has been sentenced to 28 years in jail.

Sandton police announced on 29 January that a man who murdered a restaurant worker at Hobart Grove Shopping Centre in Bryanston was handed a 28-year jail sentence by the South Gauteng High Court.

Spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, Captain Granville Meyer said, “Decent Tshuma, aged 29, was convicted on charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm after he pleaded guilty.”

Meyer said Tshuma was sentenced to 25 years for murder and an additional seven years for attempted murder, of which four years were suspended. He was also sentenced to three years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, which will run concurrently with the murder charge.

It was found that the accused had murdered the deceased by shooting him and a fellow worker at Wombles Steakhouse in December 2016.

Sandton Chronicle reported in 2016 that Yvette Barker, owner the restaurant at the time of the incident, and her gardener Tabani Dube were attacked while offloading supplies at the restaurant.

Barker was stabbed twice and released from a local medical facility the same day while Dube was fatally shot.

“The court praised the investigating officer, Detective Constable Ronald Sigidi of Saps Sandton detectives for his investigative work in the matter,” said Meyer.

Tshuma’s application for leave of appeal was denied.
