Reverend retires after 42 years of service

BRYANSTON – Reverend Godfrey Henwood recently conducted his final service before retirement at the St Michaels Anglican Church.

St Michael’s Anglican Church in Bryanston hosted a fond farewell for Reverend Canon Godfrey Henwood on Sunday 21 January when he retired after 42 years of ministry.

Henwood spent the last eight years as rector of St Michaels. More than 700 people attended the church service, and 350 stayed for speeches and a performance by the children’s choir before a big cake was cut.

Warden Cuz Grindley said the Anglican Archbishop Thabo Magoba acknowledged in his recent book the guiding strength and values he gained while being trained at the Cathedral by Godfrey during the difficult times before 1994.

“As he presided at the service Bishop Steve Moreo praised the life’s work of this humble priest and his wife, a teacher, whose contribution to thousands of lives is immeasurable,” said Grindley.

“The community had a festive time celebrating and reminiscing after the service at a braai set up for them by the local Mike’s Kitchen. Children scooted around between delightful musical recitals.

“I heard that Fr Godfrey is ‘an amazing intellect’, ‘disciplined but compassionate’, ‘a true leader’, and ‘he saved my life’. They are going to be missed.”
