Bryanston matrics excited about their results

BRYANSTON – Bryanston High School matrics achieved a 98.8 per cent pass rate and a decent number of bachelor passes.

The matric results for 2017 were released yesterday, with many matrics ecstatic about their results, which saw a national increase in the pass rate.

Sandton Chronicle visited Bryanston High School to hear about their results and the matrics’ reactions to their successes.

Principal John Skelton said that the class of 2017 achieved a 98.8 per cent pass rate, with 150 matrics enrolled last year. “Results at the top were very good and we had more bachelor passes than normal with a lot of distinctions.

“There was also a big shift from E candidates [40 to 49 per cent] to D candidates [50 to 59 per cent], which showed a great improvement. The heads of departments are pleased with the averages achieved.

“I hope that the class of 2017 will take tertiary education seriously and never stop studying. Use a gap year to bring focus to your studies, if necessary.”

The top matriculant, Ian Edwards, achieved nine distinctions and a 92 per cent average.

“To get nine distinctions is unbelievable,” said Skelton.

Ian said he was sent a grainy photo of the newspaper at around 11.30pm on 4 January. “I saw all the distinctions and I was really pleased. I couldn’t control my excitement and had to tell my friends and family immediately. This year, I will be studying electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cape Town.”

Matrics rushed to the school early in the morning on 5 January to fetch their matric certificates and chat to one another about their achievements.

Xander-Kyle Neilson said he was really nervous about his results before they were released but felt comforted when he saw them in an SMS just after 6am on 5 January. “I feel relieved, happy and excited about the future.”
