Keep your vehicle safe these holidays

SANDTON – Check out these tips to make sure your car is safe over the festive season.

Bearing in mind the crime statistics released earlier this year indicating a 14,6 per cent increase in carjacking in South Africa, it’s natural for motorists to be concerned about the safety of their vehicles, especially over the festive holiday period.

In the Sandton area, carjacking saw a staggering increase of 18.4 per cent with 90 cases reported over the 2016/17 period. Theft out of motor vehicles also saw an increase of 23.7 per cent, with 1 586 cases reported over the same period.

Instead of staying awake all night, concerned about the safety of your vehicle, here are some helpful tips to take the stress out of car ownership …

  • Whether your car is parked at home or at a shop, always double-check that it is locked to prevent signal jamming criminals from driving off with your car
  • Make sure you don’t leave any valuables lying in plain sight to attract criminals
  • Whether it’s day or night, make sure your vehicle is parked in a secure area or near security guards or security cameras
  • Never leave an unattended car running, as this is an easy way for criminals to steal your car
  • Make sure your car is fitted with a stolen vehicle recovery device.

With these helpful tips in mind, it’s comforting to find ways to minimise the risk of vehicle theft.
