Keep safety first ahead of festive season

SANDTON – Andrew McMurray of the Sandton Community Policing Forum shares some safety tips ahead of the festive season.

The holidays are here and while it’s a great time to relax and unwind from a busy year, it’s also a time to remain vigilant due to high crime levels. Sandton Community Policing Forum Sector 4 chairperson, Andrew McMurray shared some safety tips ahead of the festive break.

“The silly season is upon us. It’s that time of year when people are going away on holiday, taking leave and generally feeling a lot more relaxed. Unfortunately, this is also the time of year when crime seems to spike,” said McMurray.

Whether you are staying at home or going away for the holidays, McMurray advised residents to ensure that all safety measures are in place at home and at business premises. “Make sure that alarms are working, burglar bars are in a good state of repair and electric fences are working.”

“If you’re going away, try to ensure that mail and newspaper deliveries are stopped or get a friend to remove post from your post box.”

When on the road, he advised motorists to take the usual precautions, not to drink and drive, keep to speed limits and observe the rules of the road. Also ensure that vehicle tracking devices are functioning. Tracking companies can do a test for motorists to make sure all is in order.

“When driving, don’t leave cellphones, laptops and shopping bags on car seats or in the footwells of your car. Place all items in the boot of your car.”

McMurray also advised car owners to physically check that their car doors are locked to prevent signal jamming at malls.

Report any suspicious activity to the police or your local security company.

“May I take this opportunity to wish everyone safe and happy holidays, and an enjoyable new year.”
