Turning signal on Main Road is meant to make turning right easier

BRYANSTON – Motorists will be pleased to see a new turning signal in Bryanston.

A new turning signal has been installed for motorists who travel on Main Road in Bryanston to ensure the safety of motorists and alleviate congestion.

The right-only turning signal was installed at the corner of Main Road and Norman Avenue in Bryanston and was requested by a resident to make the right turn safer and easier.

David Potter, Ward 102 councillor said, “At the request of San Sereno Retirement Village, my office championed the installation of right turning arrows at the intersection of Main Road corner Norman Avenue in Mill Hill.”

“The introduction of the right turning arrow will allow for the safe crossing of motorists travelling towards Randburg across Main Road into Norman Avenue (Mill Hill suburb).”

Potter said that it is the second implementation of a right turn arrow in the ward, with the other being at the intersection of Main Road corner Peter Place in Bryanston, a larger and busier intersection with a blind rise.

“The Johannesburg Roads Agency is to be thanked for their interest in road safety in Ward 102.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, operations manager: marketing and communications for the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said that JRA received concerns for motorist safety due to the high number of opposing traffic flow along Main Road which makes it almost impossible to turn right into Norman Avenue during peak times. “The motorists wanting to turn right then have to wait for the amber and all-red period on Main before they can proceed.

“Consequently, JRA traffic engineers undertook a full traffic count at the intersection to determine whether an exclusive right turn arrow was warranted from Main Road into Norman Avenue during the afternoon peak.

“The study found that the arrow was indeed warranted and to ensure motorists’ safety, the introduction of the exclusive right turning arrow was implemented.”

Peters-Scheepers said that fine tuning will be done at a later stage to determine if this arrow is also required during other periods of the day.
