Six water usage tips that can help while you wait for the burst pipe to get fixed

SANDTON – Save water - use a water spaniel to clean the dishes ...

While large parts of northern Johannesburg, especially in the Sandton area have been left without water recently, we thought it best to provide our readers with some helpful, and very light-hearted, tips to survive this man-made drought.

Wear it until it stinks, and then wear it again.
Did you know that two-thirds of South Africans wear dirty clothes from the laundry basket? Wearing clothes that can still be passed off as clean will help you avoid using water altogether.

Use perfume to cover up body odour.
No water? No problem. Cover up any hints of body odour with copious amounts of deodorant. At some point, you will have to make alternative plans to cover up the musk, but it will buy you a day or two.

Grow a beard.
Going a la natural can save a huge amount of water. Stop shaving your face, armpits and legs in the shower, it wastes about 10 litres of water. Let it all hang out. Make a fashion statement.

Shower away from home.
Start using the showers at the gym, club, pub and work.

Make use of a B&B until the water outage is over.
There are hundreds of listings for cheap overnight rooms in northern Johannesburg. Alternatively, find a cheap hotel and split the cost among friends. Prepare a bath time schedule by family.

And lastly, when the dirty dishes start piling up, let the dog lick them clean. It’s about time Spot carries his weight.
