Over the coming months, beginning on 20 November, the City of Johannesburg will roll out free and subsidised Wi-Fi with 47 new Wi-Fi sites going live.
The MMC for Finance, Dr Rabelani Dagada, who is also responsible for overseeing the City’s Information Technology Department and Strategy, said turning Joburg into a smart city is important for economic development, and making access to the Internet easier for residents. Read more here.
The City of Johannesburg came clean about another crisis it is faced with – crumbling infrastructure.
Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba called it the end of a cliff that is fast approaching. Over and above battling the infamous billing crisis, the City also has to deal with this R170 billion billing infrastructure backlog. The mayor said he wanted to be honest with the public about the real state the City is in since he believes no one really knows how bad it is. Indeed, the Johannesburg Roads Agency alone needs R81,5 billion over 10 years to fix its problems. It does not have it.
City Power needs R17 billion to fix aged transformers and replace overhead cables that are so prone to theft. It does not have it.

After its first application failed, the ANC Johannesburg caucus once again tabled motions of no confidence on 10 November against the Speaker of Council, Vasco Da Gama and Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba. On 13 September, Funzela Ngobeni, the leader of council’s executive business and MMC for Development Planning, said his committee had found the ANC’s first motion of no confidence against Mashaba and the speaker inadmissible.
The ANC then approached the High Court to intervene, but the matter was struck off the roll on the basis that it was not urgent. Read more here.
The Minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganyi has called on all South Africans to exercise caution on the roads this upcoming festive season.
In addition, he has directed law enforcement officers to arrest all transgressors indiscriminately. Maswanganyi reminded South Africans that road safety for drivers and pedestrians alike is non-negotiable and it is everyone’s responsibility to behave appropriately on the road.
