Original report, 8 November, 1.52pm

A store in a shopping centre in Morningside was robbed in the early hours of this morning (8 November).

According to information received, four armed men are said to have broken into the store, stealing perfumes only and fleeing in a Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Golf 7.

Stefan Maloney, CEO of TRT Security, said the incident happened at around 4.30am this morning and that his company, currently operating next door to the centre, became aware of the situation and responded.

“The suspects locked up two of my guards in the guard room and took their cellphones,” said Maloney.

He said the suspects then proceeded to force open the doors to the store, but only stole perfume.

“There have been six or seven similar robberies across Gauteng and it is a syndicate operating in the area,” alleged Maloney.

Maloney believed the syndicate must have a market for the perfume somewhere because that is all they seem to steal.

He said that police were on the scene.

Captain Molefe Mogodi, spokesperson for the Sandton Police could not be reached for comment, despite several attempts. Attempts to obtain comment from centre management and the store also proved to be fruitless.

This is a developing story and information will be added as it becomes available.
