ICYMI – Carjacking on the rise: what you need to know about Sandton’s crime stats

SANDTON – The crime statistics for 2016/17 was released in Parliament today.

The national police crime statistics for the 2016/17 period was released in Parliament today by the Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula.

The statistics detail the number of cases reported for various crimes at all the stations across the country.

A staggering total of 1 738 980 cases of crime was reported nationwide for different offences.
The Sandton Police Station statistics show that a total of 8 368 cases was reported in the 17 categories of crime.

Some of the notable stats show that murder in the Sandton precinct has gone down with 25 per cent with nine cases reported.

However, there has been an increase in attempted murder by 70 per cent with 17 cases reported compared to 10 in the previous year.

The number of sexual offences reported has gone down with 13,7 per cent with 44 reported cases.
Cases of rape have seen a 6.9 per cent increase with 31 reported cases.

Carjacking has also seen an increase of 18,4 per cent with 90 cases reported and theft out of motor vehicles has also increased by 23,7 per cent with 1 586 cases reported.

Robberies at residential properties have seen a decrease of 7,8 per cent with 226 reported cases.

Crimes detected as a result of police action with regard to illegal firearms has increased by 6,4 per cent with 28 cases reported.

The Sandton Police Station is placed 13th in the National top 30 stations.
