St Stithians College was more than happy to reflect on the importance of teachers on this year’s World Teachers Day. Rutendo Samakande, head girl of the Girls College at St Stithians College, expressed how important it is to give recognition to teachers globally.
She said, “Teachers are a vital part of everyday society, without teachers there wouldn’t be doctors or engineers. They are the base of society and should be appreciated.”

She went on to say that teachers have played an important role in her growth since her arrival at the school in Grade 8, as she has met some remarkable teachers and created bonds that will never be broken. Rutendo added that she would like to see teachers getting more recognition worldwide. She feels that teachers need to be as appreciated for the role they play in shaping lives.
Head of accounting, Martin Perold, who has been teaching for 15 years, shared that the main joy is the influence he has on the world. “Teachers are in a profession that makes other professions possible.” He added that without school teachers, no one gets to go to university to study one of the fields that make our lives easier.
Perold offered words of encouragement to future teachers and those considering teaching. “The difference you can make as a teacher with somebody’s life is worth more than any salary in the world as you are actively working to help young people achieve their goals and potential.”
Sally James, head of the girl’s college, reflected on the teachers she currently works with. “We are really lucky to have highly competent and motivated teachers to give their very best.” She added that these teachers personify the school slogan ‘Inspiring excellence and making a difference’.
James believes the college is working hard to show their appreciation of teachers by giving them the recognition they deserve, which she said is a very important part of her job. She added that teachers are responsible for growing people and that it is an enormous responsibility and privilege.
Her message to teachers worldwide is, “Continue to do the great work and inspire those around you. We recognise the role you play in our country by growing leaders.”
