Following the failure to collect R6 billion in e-toll revenue from Gauteng motorists, the government has proposed amendments to the South African National Roads Agency Limited and National Roads Amendment Bill.
The implementation of e-tolls in 2013 was met with widespread criticism due to its lack of public consultation.
According to reports, the proposed amendments to the bill would give provincial and municipal governments more power in the implementation of e-tolls. It will also acknowledge the consequences felt by Gauteng motorists.
The premier will be given at least 30 days to accept objections on a road proposed for tolling, with 55 per cent leading to the call for a referendum within six weeks.
The amendments will also call on Sanral to identify alternative routes of comparable distance before tolling roads.
