Two members of 1st Bryanston Cub Pack receive Leaping Wolf awards

Nadia Ludwig and Liam Fiodi, both members of the 1st Bryanston Cub Pack, were awarded the prestigious Leaping Wolf badge recently. The Leaping Wolf is the highest badge a Cub can earn and marks the culmination of a four-year advancement programme.

To earn their Leaping Wolf badges, Ludwig and Fiodi had to complete a number of special tasks and projects over and above the regular Cub programme and activities. These included a greening project in the community, finding out about a technology of their choice, researching a relevant global or societal issue and presenting ideas of what could be done. Finally, they have to complete a personal challenge of their choice, which has to be completed over a number of months.

As a personal challenge, Liam enlisted the support of his local church group to collect teddy bears, which were then donated to children suffering from cancer. He prepared a poster advertising the project and gave a short talk to the church members to explain his idea. This provided him with an opportunity to learn public speaking skills, and how to go about planning and organising a project.

Nadia chose to learn French, as her personal challenge and has been attending lessons on a Saturday morning for the past few months. She has now mastered the basics of conversational French and was particularly proud to have been able to put these skills to good use. A number of French speaking children also belong to the 1st Bryanston Group, and Nadia was able to help translate a leader’s instructions to one of the younger Cubs during a Friday evening meeting.

Both Nadia and Liam will continue their involvement in Scouting, as they have now moved on to join the Scout Troop, which caters for older children.

According to Gary Pienaar, one of the adult leaders in the group, it takes significant effort to complete the Leaping Wolf award as well as significant personal effort, discipline and self-motivation. “As the child is expected to work on these tasks outside of the normal weekly structured programme, this helps to develop basic planning, organising and leadership skills,” he said.
