Cleanup at Sandton Police Station

SANDTON – The Sandton Community Police Forum held a cleanup day at the Sandton Police Station for Mandela Day.

The Sandton Community Police Forum (CPF) organised a cleanup of the Sandton Police Station for Mandela Day on 18 July.

The Sandton CPF put a call out to the community to participate and spend their 67 minutes giving back to the people in blue.

Julian Ortlepp, Sandton CPF chairperson for Sector 3, said the day was the brainchild of Denise Abrahams. “The station is in disrepair and we identified the main areas to clean.”

Ortlepp said that everyone was a volunteer and did it for free. “We want to get the message across that the community can assist the police as well.”

He continued that the community needs the station and the station is in need of a face-lift and repairs. “This cleanup was the first time it has been done here.”

The was a big turnout and, by the end of the day, the difference inside the Station was obvious. The walls and windows were clean, floors shining, carpets clean and the boardroom, which received plenty of attention, was sparkling.

The outside area of the station also got a cleanup, with the garden and trees receiving attention and alien species being cleared away.

Ortlepp said these kinds of initiatives are important as they build stronger relationships between the police and the public. “The relationships are vital in the fight against crime and one of the pillars of community policing.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed towards this event and made it such a success. We were very touched when a lady called Margaret, who is a domestic worker from the area, arrived with her own bucket and cleaning materials to help clean.

“We have a wonderful community spirit in Sandton.”
