67 minutes for animals on Mandela Day at Sandton SPCA

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA will be hosting a Fun Day of activities for Mandela Day

Mandela Day takes place on 18 July and the Sandton SPCA and has various activities lined up to commemorate the life of a humanitarian leader, Nelson Mandela.

The spirit of Mandela Day has not only rubbed off on all South Africans, but it has become a global initiative that gives people an opportunity to “give back” to the community and to lend a helping hand for 67 minutes, in the spirit of honouring this altruistic icon.

The Sandton SPCA will extend the festivities to include Saturday 22 July.

Michelle York of the Sandton SPCA said, “We are hoping families will come and spend an hour or two at the pound as an extended commemoration of Mandela Day.”

The festivities on 22 July will extend to include a delicious food truck, called, Horn OK Please, which specialises in Indian cuisine. Food truck owner, Nikash Bagirathi, will donate 100 per cent of income from food sales to the SPCA.

In the spirit of Making every day a Mandela Day, the Sandton SPCA encourages supporters to consider signing a R67 per month debit order, which is approximately the cost of a burger meal from a fast food outlet – a small sacrifice.

MySchool cards also provide an ongoing source of income so vital in the day-to-day running of the shelter.

Companies are welcome to request donation tins, which can be placed in their offices leading up to Mandela Day and delivered to the SPCA on 18 July 2017.

“No day supporting animal welfare can be complete without some interaction with the dogs and cats who call the SPCA home,” said York.

Activities include a kitty cuddle where a donation of R67 gives you 67 minutes in the company of the cuddliest kittens and cats.

Wagging tail time gives you 67 minutes play time with some of our loving dogs in a large grass enclosure for R67 – guaranteed to make their tails wag.

Hot Dogs Grooming will be on site for those who would like to sponsor a little pampering for the pooches. Well-groomed dogs are far more attractive for adoption.

Companies who are unable to visit the SPCA on Mandela Day but wish to get involved could have a Casual Day where their staff can dress in casual clothing for the work day, and donate the proceeds. Dog and cat food or blanket drives are also very popular activities that everyone can get involved in.

Some local schools are also getting into the Mandela mood, and are having a Topsy-Turvy Dress-up Day to raise funds. Any donations are always welcome and can be dropped off at any time.

The Sandton SPCA is looking for A face-painter who is able to transform a visitor into a cat or dog on 18 and 22 July. The visitor will be placed into a kennel and can be ‘rescued’ for a small adoption fee.
