Man is knocked down on N3 and succumbs to his injuries

A man was knocked over on the N3 southbound before the Marlboro off-ramp on 9 July after his father’s vehicle broke down and he walked down the highway to warn passing motorists of the hazard ahead.

He was struck down by a passing vehicle and died later at the scene. Netcare 911 spokesperson, Nick Dollman said an off-duty Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support paramedic had noticed the scene while travelling home and stopped to assist.

“As he tried to safely make his way over to the emergency lane he noticed a man crying and then realised that there had been a collision. The paramedic parked safely off the road, approached the man and offered to help.

“The man alleged that their vehicle had broken down and his son went down the highway with a torch to warn motorists of a hazard ahead and was struck by a passing vehicle. The exact cause of the incident and preceding events will form part of a police investigation,” said Dollman.

When the paramedic noticed that the victim was motionless, he immediately assisted. “The paramedic initiated CPR and continued ventilating the victim until additional assistance arrived. Netcare 911 paramedics responded from their nearby base in Sunninghill and arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.

“Another ambulance also stopped on the scene to assist. Tragically despite the efforts of the paramedic and the medical team that joined him, the young man died on the scene as a result of the severe injuries that he sustained.”

Dollman said the vehicle which knocked the man down did stop at the scene. Metro police could not confirm whether a case of culpable homicide had been opened. Updates will follow once they become available.
