Gloves are off in Twitter outrage against Miss South Africa

SANDTON – Miss SA has addressed the uproar on social media over her wearing gloves while feeding children.

South African Twitter users are outraged at what is being called a racist act on the part of newly crowned Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters after photos and videos emerged online showing the beauty queen handing out snacks to children in Soweto – while wearing gloves.

Nel-Peters was on a winter soup drive in association with the Sandton-based Maslow Hotel.

In a video on her Twitter page, Nel-Peters claims she wore the gloves for hygienic purposes, as she was handling food. “All the volunteers on site wore gloves. We thought it was the right thing to do, seeing as we were working with food. To me, the moral of the story is that 300 kids received a proper warm lunch,” she said.

Twitter user Julian Thabo Shub’s opinion seems to be one that is shared with other Twitter users. “Ok wait. Miss SA had gloves on while breaking bread with black kids and holding them for pics. Gloves off when it’s white kids?” he said on the social platform.

Great increase in South Africa’s glass recycling habits

While some are enraged with racial fury, others are confused as to why the incident has been blown to such big proportions. “Miss SA needs to stay strong. The media is manipulative and powerful. Looking for angles. Even if they are small,” said Twitter user Kolisa Skweyiya.
