Members of the Greater Local Mining Communities Business Forum took to the streets of Sandton on 28 June in a planned strike action.
The forum members marched from George Lea Park South (Lower Sandhurst side) to the JSE Building in Sandton to hand over a memorandum. Traffic backed up in the area as the 2 000 strong group of people marched through Sandton.

Director of marketing and corporate affairs at the JSE, Zeona Jacobs said in response to the handover of the memorandum, “We have received the memorandum and gave the mining community the respect to meet with them. The JSE will respond to the greater platinum belt community. The demands as they stand are not something we can act on. What we have done, is engage with the Chamber of Mines to resolve the matters raised. This same community has marched before to the Department of Mineral Resources.

“I heard their intention to march to the Constitutional Court and to the Presidency. It is clear that they would like to be heard and are using all avenues possible to be heard.”
The memorandum is a request to investors in mines to understand the plight of the poor and the poverty of the miners and their families.
