March in Sandton causes traffic mayhem

SANDTON - About 2 000 members from the Greater Local Mining Communities Business Forum are marching to the JSE building in Sandton this afternoon.

Members from by the Greater Local Mining Communities Business Forum took to the streets of Sandton this afternoon in a planned strike action.

The Forum members are marching to the JSE Building in Sandton to hand over a memorandum. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as traffic is heavily expected. It is reported that about 2 000 people attended the march.

Director of marketing and corporate affairs at the JSE, Zeona Jacobs said in response to the handover of the memorandum, “We have received the memorandum and gave the mining community the respect to meet with them. The JSE will respond to the greater platinum belt community. The demands as they stand are not something we can act on. What we have done is engage with the Chamber of Mines to resolve the matters raised. This same community has marched before to the Department of Mineral Resources and today to the JSE and I heard their intention to march to the Constitutional Court and to the Presidency. It is clear that they would like to be heard and are using all avenues possible to be heard.”
