UPDATE: Identity of man gunned down on Bowling Avenue confirmed

KRAMERVILLE – 37-year-old entrepreneur and businessman Ignatius Mpambani was gunned down in broad daylight by four suspects on 20 June.


Midday traffic ground to a halt in Bowling Avenue in Kramerville on 20 June as a man lay slumped over the steering wheel of his luxury vehicle with fatal gunshot wounds.

Police confirmed that the victim was Ignatius Mpambani (37)‚ an entrepreneur who had interests in the telecommunications and engineering sectors. He was also popular in the Free State where he had been a driving force behind festive season entertainment events in Welkom.

“That’s how my friend and homeboy from Welkom‚ Free State … ‘Igo’ Mpambani’s life ended … may your soul rest in peace‚” his close friend Louis Lebusho Moahlodi said in a post on Facebook.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson said, “Upon closer inspection, paramedics found a man, believed to be in his 40s, lying in the front seat of his vehicle. Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained numerous gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done and he was declared dead on the scene.”

Meiring added that it was alleged that a number of gunmen opened fire on the driver and vehicle causing it to crash into the pavement. Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, provincial spokesperson for the police said, “The victim was coming from the bank when he was attacked by four suspects.

It is unclear at this time if any money was stolen from the scene, it is forming part of the investigation that is currently underway.” He confirmed that the four suspects were armed with firearms and the victim died at the scene.

Linda Marie van Eck‚ who had handled the slain businessman’s accounts‚ could not understand why anybody would want to kill him. “He was a very humble person in spite of his riches,” she said.

“I worked with him for four years when I lived in Johannesburg. He was a wonderful person‚ very humble. He was always friendly. Even though he had a lot of money he was one of the few people who stayed humble.”

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said‚ “The investigation is ongoing. There have been no arrests at this stage.”
