Stop thinking someone else will save the planet – it’s time to do something

JOBURG – World Environment Day is being celebrated around the world on 5 June. Here is how you can help.

We all have to save the planet. The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June 2017, is ‘Connecting people to Nature’.

Gill Hamilton, branch manager for the African Climate Reality Project said World Environment Day is a reminder for all South Africans to protect and preserve the environment. “It can only be safeguarded for future generations if we are all willing to pool our collective efforts together,” said Hamilton.

While Africa is warming faster than the global average, it is not too late to change course.

“The choices we make every day, however small they may seem, play a key role in slowing climate change,” said Hamilton.

To benefit from the day, the African Climate Reality Project (ACRP), based in Wendywood, Sandton, encouraged South Africans to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and importance, and to take forward the call to protect the environment that we share.

Climate change is not a problem of the future

It is a problem we are facing now. It has emerged as the most demanding socio-economic challenge facing the planet. The effects are felt every day, in the form of health problems, environmental damage and a natural resource system that no longer meets human and wildlife needs. The likelihood of more damage grows, thanks to the increasing population, rampant consumption habits, and unsustainable water management.

Extreme water supply limitations have come into sharp focus recently

Particularly for residents of Cape Town. The second biggest city in the country is now down to 500 million litres of water day – a drop from 800 million litres before dam levels fell dramatically as the drought strengthened its hold.

The most important way to protect the environment is to be informed – a good place to start is to visit https://climatereality.co.za. Use your knowledge to help change lives for the better. Use your voice to demand more action to be taken on climate change.
