UPDATE: Fire ravages Braam Park office building

BRAAM PARK - Despite no injuries being reported, an undisclosed number of people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The fire that ravaged much of the Forum 1 building at the Braam Park office park in Braamfontein on 18 April caused a torrent of concerns being raised around occupational health and safety.

Despite no injuries being reported, an undisclosed number of people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. Sanlam, which owns the office park said in a statement released on 18 April that the cause of the fire was unknown, while forensics and insurance investigators were deployed to carry out the necessary building inspections in order to determine the origin of the fire.

Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel met with the real estate company which manages part of the office block on 4 May. Speaking to City Buzz today (9 May), Robert Mulaudzi, EMS spokesperson, said the meeting was fruitful, but would not be drawn to comment on the contents of the discussions. “There’s nothing much we want to get out there regarding engagements between ourselves and them for now,” said Mulaudzi.

“They need us, we need them. The people who are occupying the building are our clients, we need each other and that’s where we stand. We’ve got good working relations [with them].”

Attempts to contact Sanlam for comment yielded no results at the time of publication. Updates will be provided once more information is made available.
