Kamers/Makers market at St John’s College supports the Uzwelo bag initiative

HOUGHTON – Each ticket purchased for the Kamers/ Makers market at St John's college included a shopping bag from Uzwelo.

Kamers/Makers, the biggest pop-up market of handmade goods in South Africa, hosted a market at St John’s College in Houghton. Kamers/Makers also recognised an opportunity to support the Uzwelo Bags initiative.

The Uzwelo Bags initiative, which is a partnership with Expand a Sign, focuses on creating jobs for women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The women were given thousands of meters of waste fabric which they use to create bags. The initiative allows them to earn a living while also uplifting and empowering the community. The products they produce include school bags, laptop bags and beach bags.
