RoadCover Cycling Team based in Parkmore Sandton, who are involved with the youth of Soweto, hosted a handover of bikes and riding gear to the Soweto Quartet cycling team.
Nick White, manager of RoadCover said, “The handover event was about promoting cycling and inspiring others to make cycling a career. The Old Mutual’s joBerg2c tour is taking place in nine days and the Soweto Quartet has entered this exciting competition. RoadCover and Cube Bikes wanted to assist with sponsorship and we gave out bikes and helmets to the Soweto Quartet team so they can look professional and continue to inspire others.”

The Soweto Quartet and other riders gathered to cycle to Enoch Sontonga Koppies in Pimville which is the highest point in Soweto.
One of the Soweto Quartet cyclists, Stephen Ramotala, also known as Ace Mashawane said, “I started cycling when my job ended in 2014. I found that working with kids helped me reaffirm my purpose and my passions.
“Currently, I teach young and old how to ride a bicycle in Soweto and I also assist in volunteering my services as a trail designer and cycling event coordinator. I want to help grow the sport in our townships and participating in joBerg2c will help me gather knowledge and new techniques.
Another Soweto Quartet cyclist, Bheki Mbele said, “I started cycling 15 years ago and my passion for the sport has given me a goal to impart the skills I have to young, up-and-coming riders in our township.”
The Old Mutual joBerg2c takes place on 21 April and is about riding the off-roads less travelled and about sharing a passion for mountain biking with those who love riding. Starting in the south of Johannesburg and finishing nine days later in Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal, the event will raise money for schools, churches and charities.
Cyclist at Soweto Quartet, Calvin Mono concluded, “I currently volunteer at Bhon4Kasi and SowetoRocks MTB, where we develop young and new riders. Being part of joBerg2c will greatly benefit our profiles and our organisation.”
