The SPCA is the leading animal welfare organisation in South Africa and its mission is to prevent cruelty to animals and positively contribute to animal welfare through serving and educating the community.
The Sandton SPCA is one of many autonomous members of the national association.
Fundraiser manager of the national SPCA Michelle York said, “We are not government funded, all our funding comes through events and donations. We are lucky though that we have many generous supporters on social media and extremely hard-working and passionate volunteers.”

An animal will be checked for microchips upon arrival at SPCA and after four days will be available for adoption. York added, “Some days we will have no animals come in and then suddenly it will be 10 in one hour and by law, we can’t turn away any animals, domesticated or not.
York said the association had inspectors who investigated all cases of cruelty. “A court order needs to be issued before the animal can be removed [from the owner] and after that, we have to wait to hear what the court will allow to happen to the animal. It takes time but we are patient as we are more than just a shelter – we are a society for the prevention of animal cruelty.
“If you are an animal lover we would love to have you as a volunteer, please do take part in our upcoming events and any donations would help us greatly.”
