Schoolchildren from Hyde Park High School mourned the loss of struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada and shared their thoughts on the impact he had on South Africans.
Matriculant Nicolai Cacao said, “He was a man and a leader who clearly stood by his ideals in extreme circumstances and he served time for those beliefs. During this sad time, we should celebrate his legacy and his life which influenced the support towards the change in our country.”
Puseletso Mohlapamaswi in Grade 12 added, “He was a man who honoured making a difference in South Africa. He was full of life, humour and always worked towards making a difference, not only in South Africa but across the world as well. He has done a lot to build South Africa and is a legend in so many ways.”
The Grade 9s also spoke about Kathrada as part of their current affairs discussion during their English period and also watched video clips of the hero throughout his life.
Shivenesen Muthan in Grade 9 said, “I feel sad that he has died, he will never be forgotten, for he has fought for our rights and to end apartheid.”
Two other Grade 9s, Yeshen Narainsamy and Mbulelo Tyhobeka, also added that although Kathrada was known as ‘uncle’ in South Africa, he has been a father figure who helped South Africa be where it is today.
