Taxi hits man and fails to stop
CRAIGHALL – A taxi knocked over a pedestrian on 16 February and failed to stop. The taxi driver fled the scene.
A taxi knocked over a pedestrian on the morning of 16 February near the Hyde Park Corner shopping centre on Jan Smuts Avenue and failed to stop.
A motorist, Byron Liatos, who witnessed the incident, gave chase and managed to force the taxi to come to a halt on the corner of Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues.
“I just saw this man’s body come out from under the back of the taxi with a metal bar. He was crumpled and not moving,” said Liatos. “And the taxi didn’t look like he was going to stop. So when he kept going, I chased him and I swerved to force him into this corner. He jumped out the taxi, ran and got into another taxi and now he’s gone.”

The taxi had been carrying several passengers at the time of the incident. Liatos spoke with Metro police officers who arrived at the scene on Rothesay Avenue to help them with their investigation.
“I want the driver found. The bar at the back of the taxi still has [the victim’s] blood on it,” Liatos said.
ER24 transported the injured pedestrian to Helen Joseph Hospital.
