SANDTON – 22 swimmers of Crawford College Sandton took part in the annual Midmar Mile.

Crawford College Sandton sent a team of 22 swimmers to participate in the Midmar Mile annual swimming event held at the Midmar Dam north of Pietermaritzburg.

The race, now in its 44th year, draws thousands of competitors from international athletes to recreational swimmers. Two of the Crawford schoolchildren participated in the 8-mile event where swimmers in all four events on Saturday and all four on Sunday try to raise money for a designated charity.

Amy van Druten, Hayley Swait and their coach Nadia Cooke all swam to raise money for the Mandeville Disabled swimming team based in Bez Valley, Johannesburg.

Spirits were high on Saturday morning as the 8-milers left for the dam very early in preparation for their first swim of the weekend. It was an exceptional day out on the water and the conditions were perfect for a good day of swimming.

Some of the school’s swimmers were taking part in their first Midmar Mile and were a little apprehensive about what lay ahead of them, but they took the challenge head-on and completed the mile in very impressive times and had fun while doing so.

Sunday brought along very different water conditions – the water was very choppy and as the day progressed, the wind picked up, which made the conditions more difficult. Swimming times for the mile on Sunday were slower, but the swimmers enjoyed the day and were already looking forward to next year’s event.

The 8-milers completed the event and each received a special 8-mile medal.
