Joburg North cluster makes various arrests

SANDTON – More than 300 suspects were arrested in the first week of February.

The Joburg North cluster had some great successes recently, with about 300 arrests for various offences such as robberies and fraud.

Constable David Mothapo, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, said one suspect was arrested in Kew and another fatally wounded.

“The suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a hijacked vehicle. The vehicle was hijacked earlier in Langlaagte and a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and the tracking company’s guards. One suspect was fatally wounded,” he explained. Mothapo said two AK-47s and a pistol were recovered.

In Midrand, police responded to a house robbery complaint and came across a Toyota Avanza. “The suspects started shooting at police, who returned fire. The suspects’ vehicle overturned during the chase,” said Mothapo. He said one suspect was arrested and a firearm with a filed-off serial number was recovered.

“In addition, 83 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence and 34 were arrested for possession of various drugs,” said Mothapo.

“Appreciation goes to every stakeholder that was involved in the successful arrest of the suspects, including Metro police, the local community policing forums, patrollers, various security companies and the community members who make it their responsibility to ensure that they stay in a crime-free society,” Mothapo said.
