64-year-old man arrested for robbery

JOBURG – Cash recovered after a woman was robbed in the Joburg CBD.

 

Johannesburg central police arrested a 64-year-old suspect for an alleged armed robbery at Lister Building, situated on the corner of Small and Jeppe streets on 30 January, just after 11am.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele it is alleged that two suspects robbed a 30-year-old woman. “The victim had her employer’s money in her handbag after she removed it from the safe in order to take it to the bank,” Mbele said.

He explained that one of the suspects pushed her while his accomplice threatened her with a knife. They grabbed her handbag and ran away. The victim immediately screamed for help and the security guard managed to apprehend one of the suspects and the handbag with cash in it was recovered.

One suspect is still at large and a police investigation is underway. The arrested suspect appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 31 January. He was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on 7 February for a formal bail application.
