Kids Haven still open for donations

SANDTON – Community members please note that the Kids Haven donation centre is still operating in Bryanston.

Kids Haven, a child and youth care centre in Bryanston, unfortunately, had their signage stolen recently but they want the public to know that they are still open for donations.

The donation centre for Kids Haven operates at Studio 1, Ferreira’s Art Gallery, 300 Main Road in Bryanston.

Susan Daly who handles fundraising at the centre said, “The centre is focused on caring for street children and children with challenging behaviour, who are living risky lives. We have 170 children who live with us. The centre is situated in Benoni, but the Kids Haven Donation Centre has been part of the Sandton map since 2001.”

Kids Haven is a registered centre with the Department of Social Development and as such receives a State grant that covers just under 50 per cent of their expenses.

“We raise the balance of the income through fundraising, grants and corporate donations plus individual donations.”

The value of the centre is that it collects second-hand items that are used by the children. Daly stressed that the centre tries to avoid buying anything.

“Our children wear donated clothing, sit on donated chairs and use donated resources for all their household needs.”

Daly highlighted, “Donations of second-hand goods enables us to provide everything that the children and the organisation need without having to spend money. This is an amazing thing and is one of the reasons why [the centre] has survived for 25 years.”

Community members who wish to donate and get involved can donate from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm.

“Unfortunately, we can’t collect donations over the weekend as we don’t have a driver, but if anyone brings donations to the gallery, the gallery staff take care of them until we open on Monday. We want to make it as easy as possible for anyone to donate their second-hand things.”
