Help feral cats and kittens
SANDTON – Feral cats get a new lease on life thanks to a caring resident.
Feral cats are a growing concern in Sandton and Gallo Manor, with seemingly little being done to curb breeding of the felines, but one Sandton resident has taken it upon herself to improve the lives of these furry friends.
“I started feeding dogs in Alex township about six years ago. It started when some children walked all the way from Alexandra township with their dogs and puppies to the vet in Gallo Manor. I intercepted them and that started my involvement with animal rescue and welfare,” said Ilona Gersun.
In November last year, Gersun noticed a number of feral cats at the Morning Glen Shopping Centre and the surrounding area. After investigating, she observed a large number of adult cats and kittens in the building next door to the BP garage.
“Unfortunately no one wants to help with this task of trapping, sterilising and the releasing of these ferals. I took it upon myself to hire a cage and started trapping in December and January. It’s hard to cope on my own. There are just too many cats to trap.”
Gersun is looking for volunteers to help trap and transport these cats to the vet, and with assisting to tame and rehome the kittens which are caught.
“I feed these cats daily and spend a fortune on cat food. I also pay for the sterilisations and I have had some help from residents, but I need more financial assistance. My income is limited, so I really need help financially to pay the expenses.”
