Former police colonel tragically killed

SANDTON – A former Sandton police colonel has been tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.

 

A former colonel at the Sandton Police Station has been tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the R563.

Fanie van der Watt (52), was left in a critical condition after his motorcycle crashed into an SUV. He died in hospital soon after his arrival.

He was travelling on the R563 on his motorcycle near the Cradle of Humankind on Sunday, 15 January, when an SUV allegedly swerved in front of him, causing a T-bone collision. ER24 paramedics were called to the scene and upon arrival found him lying on the road. He had sustained numerous critical injuries and was stabilised by the paramedics. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Family and friends described him as a man who was as tough as nails and very trustworthy.

“You [Fanie] were certainly one of the best police officers I ever had the pleasure of serving with. Your leadership and courage will always be remembered. You have served well,” said Jennu Naidoo, one of his colleagues, in a post on Facebook.

“Rest In Peace, Fanie, you were a true legend and a man of massive respect among everyone who knew you,” said Peter Klurge in a Facebook post.

“Fanie, my beloved brother-in-law, enjoy your heavenly voyage,” said Charmain Wilson Robbertse.

Fanie van der Watt’s funeral will be held on Saturday, 21 January at 2pm at Fourways Memorial Park, 1 Memorial Lane, Craigavon, Johannesburg.
