The matric Class of 2016 at Hyde Park High School has excelled in its final IEB matric examinations with a pass rate of 98 per cent.
The school is the only government school that writes the IEB matric examination and has achieved 117 distinctions and strives to maintain the highest standard of education.
The school was recently voted as the best government school in Johannesburg and is celebrating 60 years of quality education this year. It is extremely proud of the matric group of 2016 with over 78 per cent of candidates achieving a bachelor’s degree pass.
Robyn Evans is the school’s Dux scholar for 2016 and was also placed in the top 1 per cent for maths literature and life orientation among all pupils who wrote these exams nationally. She achieved a total of seven distinctions. Most schools around the world regard academic excellence as the most important criterion for a Dux award.
Evans was a vibrant member of the school community and actively participated in all the major productions; being an accomplished singer and qualified Latin American dancer adding her professional touch to the musicals, and with her talent, she performed in the lead roles from grades 8 to 12. She also received full colours for dramatics and was a member of the public speaking team, achieving an A in grades 11 and 12.
Manolis Vogiatzis, the headmaster, said, “Robyn embodies the positive and enthusiastic outlook we strive to instil in our pupils and expect she will go far in her chosen field of study.”

Evans commented, “Hyde Park High School provided me with the best education in a friendly environment with a wide variety of extra-curricular activities from which to choose.” She went on to say that she thoroughly enjoyed her time as a student at the school. Evans will be studying dramatic art at Wits University and her long-term goal is to be a successful actress in both stage and film.
Samuel Hindson is also a recipient of the Dux award with a total of seven distinctions, achieving 91 per cent for his IT exam. In addition to his academic ability, he is also a talented and accomplished guitar player and received full colours for public speaking as well as dramatics. Hindson commented that he found his time at Hyde Park High School nurturing enough to provide a solid educational foundation, yet not so much as to hinder independent thinking. Hindson is a high achiever and plans to study astrophysics and astronomy at Wits University.
Mark Alance was placed third for the school’s matric results and also received seven distinctions with 91 per cent for history and a highly commendable 90 per cent for science. Alance enjoyed his time on the tennis courts and achieved his half colours. Ultimately, he would like to study in the United States.
