Come celebrate Chinese New Year

SANDTON – It's the year of the rooster and you're invited...

 

Community members are welcome to attend some exciting Chinese New Year festivities at the Nan Hua Temple in Bronkhorstspruit.

The Chinese calendar has a specific animal for each year. Du Mann Ying of the Parkmore Meditation Centre in Sandton explained, “According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the year 2017 is the year of the fire rooster. In the Chinese element theory, those who are born in the year of the fire rooster are characterised to be trustworthy, great timekeepers and responsible.”

He added that the rooster symbolised the dawn, an awakening, triumph and success.

“This year, the rooster is subjected to the fire element in its yin form. The yin fire is believed to express inner warmth

and understanding, the rise of forgotten thoughts, surprising events and atmosphere that can both be stiff and contrasting.

“Loyalty, commitment, hard work, family bonds and appropriate appearances are some of the characteristics that will be rewarded this year. The year of the rooster will be focused on hardship, commitment, lessons of order, exploration and strategic planning.”

The Nan Hua Temple will host a cultural festival on 29 January for the celebration of the year of the rooster. Various events and activities will be held on this day such as a light offering Dharma ceremony, multicultural performances from the Nan Hua Performing Arts Group, martial arts, Chinese yo-yo dance, Indian dancing and Korean dancing.

Various stalls around the temple will sell traditional Chinese, Cantonese and Taiwanese cuisine, lanterns, Chinese zodiac paintings, handcrafts and Buddhism-related products.
