SANDTON – A taxi driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel, causing an accident in Paulshof.

A taxi driver has begun his year on an unfortunate note after he sustained serious injuries in an accident.

It was reported by Emer-G-Med paramedics on the morning of 3 January that a serious collision occurred on the N1 south between Rivonia and William Nicol in Paulshof.

The Emer-G-Med media report said, “It’s reported by the taxi’s passengers that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, colliding with the back of a slow moving truck and leaving the 16 passengers and driver with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

“The driver was entrapped within the wreckage. The jaws of life and other rescue tools were used to cut him free from the vehicle, while paramedics from various services worked to stabilise him.”

Once the driver had been freed, he was transported to a nearby hospital under advanced life support care. The media report highlighted that the 16 passengers were found seated at the side of the highway, having sustained less serious injuries. “They were treated at the scene before being transported to various nearby facilities for further management.”

The truck’s occupants were uninjured in the crash and Metro was on the scene to investigate the incident. Metro spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane said, “The only person that was seriously injured in the accident was the taxi driver who was taken to Johannesburg General Hospital, and the passengers only sustained minor injuries and were taken to Alexandra Clinic. I cannot confirm whether or not the taxi driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.”
