18 injured in multi-vehicle accident

SANDTON – A truck and six cars have been involved in the collision.

At 8am this morning, 14 December,  EMER-G-MED dispatched various vehicles, and othe other emergency services responded to reports of a mass casualty multi-vehicle collision on Grayston Drive, between Katherine Drive and the M1, in Sandton north of Johannesburg.

EMER-G-MED’s spokesperson Max Cohen said on arrival paramedics found that a taxi had rolled. A truck and six cars had also been involved in the collision, which left three of the cars and the taxi badly damaged. A total of 18 people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Most were found standing around the scene, while others were found lying across the roadway.

The patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being transported to various nearby hospitals and clinics for further care. The exact events leading up to the collision are unknown, but it is alleged that the taxi experienced a complete brake failure, said Cohen.

EMER-G-MED would like to urge motorists to avoid clogging up intersections, as well as to move out of the way for emergency vehicles. Paramedics sat in traffic for upwards of 10 minutes to travel 500 metres from the M1 to the accident scene.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officials are on the scene to investigate. Motorists are urged to avoid the area, as there are heavy delays on all routes leading to the scene.
