Meet your new commander

SANDTON – Brigadier Egen Moodley has his finger on Sandton's pulse.

Sandton Police Station has a new station commander and he is serious about taking the fight right to the doorsteps of Sandton’s most violent criminals.

Brigadier Egen Moodley was recently appointed after transferring from Wierdabrug Police Station in Valhalla, Centurion.

Moodley entered police management in the early 2000s and has almost 15 years’ experience in managing police stations across Gauteng.

“I was promoted to captain in 2000 as a station commander of a satellite station in Nigel, and after six months I moved to the main Nigel station where I was eventually appointed as acting station commander,” he said.

During the early 2000s, police introduced the Resolution 7 Training and Redeployment Programme, which aimed to train and place promising officers in management positions across the country.

“I was sent on a course called functional skills for station commanders. It was one of the first training programmes for station commanders in South Africa. I was eventually moved to various police stations on the East Rand and Centurion, acting as station commander,” said Moodley.

He already has his finger on the pulse of Sandton and has identified some major challenges facing the area.

“Sandton is a large area to police. We are policing 34 suburbs with 34 large shopping centres. There are a lot of international events taking place on a daily basis, constant construction work, easy access to motorways and a close proximity to less secure neighbourhoods. These factors all pose a serious security risk to Sandton.”

Moodley added that property crimes, aggravated robberies and hijackings remained a concern.

“We are currently implementing a back to basics policy, which is a countrywide operation, in conjunction with operations focused on maintaining safety and order during the festive season. Our festive season operation plan includes heightened police activity at all major centres of public interest, roadblocks, social crime prevention in the form of educational days and increased police visibility.”

Moodley concluded with an appeal to the Sandton community to work with police, their local Community Policing Forum and private security groups to help combat crime.

“It is our job to serve and protect, but we need all the help we can get. I urge the people of Sandton to take an active stance in their communities, and to get involved in the fight against crime.”
