Veggie market a huge success

SANDTON – The vegetarian market held on 9 November at the Nan Hua Buddhist Cultural Centre in Parkmore was a huge success.

A special market for vegetarians and health food fanatics was held on 9 November in Parkmore at the Nan Hua Buddhist Cultural Centre.

Members of the public were invited to put their cooking skills to the test and aspiring chefs put their best dishes forward to compete for the prize of the day’s best dish.

The centre’s spokesperson, Du Mann Ying said, “There were three winners which were voted for by the public, however, [all] participants were winners as they were rewarded gifts.”

The market also aimed to create recycling awareness and a love for the environment. Posters were put up around the venue explaining why it is vital to recycle and provided facts on recycling and pollution.

Parkmore Meditation is a branch of Nan Hua Temple and the temple’s manager, venerable Hui Xing said, “The goal of [becoming] vegetarian is to keep healthy, save the environment [which is our] earth and most of all it is to cultivate compassion for all living beings. After tasting delicious and different vegetarian cuisine, one should develop, furthermore, one’s good mind, good heart and good feelings. We call these the three goods.”

Ying added that all of the attendees enjoyed the healthy, earth-friendly market.

“Everybody enjoyed it. We should host more similar events more often. This is the first time the centre held such an event. Since the feedback is so great, we will discuss it in our next meeting when the next event shall be arranged for.”

She highlighted that the aim of the grand master, venerable Hsin Yung, the founder of our order, is to make vegetarian dishes as delicious as possible. “Once the palate and taste buds are satisfied, there won’t be any craving for meat or seafood.”

For those who are not familiar with vegetarian cuisine and need some inspiration and guidance, Ying suggested a few tasty, healthy foods. “All types of vegetables are great. Bean curd [tofu] is a good substitute for protein. Mushroom is also good. Indian Briyani is appetising enough. There are just so many [substitutes].”
