SANDTON – A beautiful and charitable yoga party brought joy to many.

A beautiful and touching act of kindness by Sandton residents made a charitable yoga party possible.

The article, Help karma yoga, Week ending 30 September, urged readers to come forward and assist a charity yoga organisation, Ombuntu Project, in putting together a year-end party for their underprivileged yoga pupils at Build the Future Preschool in Kaya Sands.

The project is run by children’s yoga instructors, Sarah Hedding and Tamlyn Cohen. Hedding was very touched by an act of kindness by a Sandton resident, Diana Graham, when she read about the charitable aspirations of the organisation in the aforementioned article.

Graham said, “After reading about Ombuntu in the paper, I decided that we needed to help wherever we could. My family and I made 85 bags of popcorn for the yoga party. It was a family affair and we, as a family, often do charitable work together. This is the first time that we have helped Ombuntu though.”

She added that she had been doing yoga for 14 years and was a strong believer in the positive impacts of the exercise regime. “Yoga is so helpful for kids and it helps relieve all of their stresses. Yoga is not just for adults. When I heard about the Ombuntu Project I went out teach poor children in Kya Sands the art of yoga. I just had to get involved.”

One of Hedding’s yoga pupils, Sandton resident Claire Gerber also got involved in the party and talked about her touching experience. “We arrived to a small children’s playschool made from brightly coloured shipping containers. “There was a lovely large playground with all sorts of playing equipment,” she said.

Like Graham, she is a firm believer that children can benefit tremendously from yoga and she brought her son Leo, who also does yoga, with her to the party to assist.

“One of the teachers asked Leo to help hand sandwiches out,” said Gerber. “At first, he was a little apprehensive, but then really got the hang of it. He told me afterwards it was so nice to have the children smile at him and say thank you.”

She concluded that the charitable party brought a beautiful sense of lightness and happiness to both her and her son.
