UPDATE: Police make arrest in toddler strangulation case

SANDTON – A young toddler has died after she was possibly strangled.

UPDATE – 13 October – 12.15pm

According to Lt. Col. De Klerk, a suspect was arrested on 12 October.

“He is a security guard at the complex where the incident took place.”

The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on 13 October on charges of murder.

A toddler is believed to have been murdered by strangulation after she was found not breathing on 28 September.

The child was rushed to Morningside Hospital.

The young girl, aged two-and-a-half years, was announced dead at the hospital after attempts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful. Lieutenant Colonel Andre de Klerk of Sandton Police Station said an autopsy had been done and the preliminary results indicated strangulation.

“There were marks on the girl’s neck which is consistent with strangulation,” De Klerk said.

“A case of murder is being investigated, but no one is being held in custody at this time.”

De Klerk said the mother had stated that the child was not in her care at the time and was with someone else. The mother picked up the child who appeared to be sleeping and only realised later that she was not breathing and rushed her to hospital.
