Belgrave Bridge has been widely discussed and is believed to be hazardous to motorists.
It was reported in the Sandton Chronicle article, Bridge must fall, Week ending 30 September, that plans were being made to close off the bridge because of its safety risk. The bridge has now officially been closed and it was further explained in the article that the duration of this closure is unknown.

A Bryanston resident, Garreth Elston, who frequently used this bridge, is unimpressed by the closure. “The bridge was closed with zero consultation with the Bryanston residents who rely on the bridge for access and the thousands of commuters who use it daily to avoid the choke spots on Bryanston Drive and St Audley Road.”
According to him, thousands of commuters use this bridge daily. “If two or three people a year have accidents off the bridge does it justify inconveniencing the thousands of others who safely use the bridge? Using this logic we should close the M1, William Nicol and N1 because there are daily accidents on these roads.”

He believes that a more practical solution would be to paint yellow lines along the bridge and install lighting and guardrails on the side to make it easier for the ‘challenged’ drivers. “But please stop this major inconvenience for those of us who know how to drive,” Elston concluded.
