Protest against prisoners

SANDTON – A protest recently took place against the practice of detention without trial in Palestine.

 

A protest against the detention of Palestinian political prisoners in Israel recently took place at the Israeli Embassy Trade Office in Sandton with support from the Palestine solidarity organisation, BDS South Africa.

The State of Palestine Embassy in South Africa has condemned the practice against Palestinian prisoners and calls for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The embassy condemns the illegality of the administrative detention as it allegedly subjects them to all kinds of torture, no visitation from lawyers and interrogation for long periods.

The peaceful protest rang with calls to ‘free Palestine’ with about 30 people joining in the protest. The picket was against the Israeli practice of detention without trial and the Israeli detention of Palestinian women, children and parliamentarians.

BDS stated that there are currently more than 7 000 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. About 750 of them are held under Israel’s ‘administrative detention’, with 350 of them being children and seven being members of parliament. More than 7 500 Palestinian children have been detained in Israeli prisons and detention facilities in the past 11 years.
